36'' to 40'' is the standard.consider ceiling height and size

the proper height is 34''.we use bead board on the bottom half

so we cut the bead board 32 inches..it comes 96'' so u will get 3 pieces

from one board..3 x 32= 96..u use a 2'' piece of board to hold the cut

bead board to the proper height..also depends on the type of rail ur using

if no bottom treatment is to be use, just a chair rail, then pop a line at  
34'' and install...
